VT Tax Extensions

Form IN-151, VT Tax Extension

Vermont allows the same automatic 6-month extension of time to file as the IRS. If you filed an extension of time to file your federal return and need an extension for your VT return, file a copy of the federal extension to the VT Department of Taxes by the original VT state return deadline.

If you did not file a federal extension and need an extension to file your VT tax return, complete and file Form IN-151 by the original VT return due date.

There is no extension of time available for:

  • HS-122: Property Tax Adjustment Claim
  • PR-141: Renter Rebate Claim

Be aware that an extension of time to file your VT return doesn't extend the time to pay any VT state taxes owed. Failure to pay your entire tax bill in full by the original VT return deadline may result in penalty and interest charges:

  • Penalty: 2% per month of outstanding tax due; up to maximum assessment of 25% of outstanding tax due
  • Interest: determined at established rate; assessed monthly on tax amount due from original VT tax return deadline to the time payment is submitted

VT Sales Tax:

Several Vermont jurisdictions also collect local option sales taxes on meals, rooms, and other general purchases.

VT Personal Property Tax:

Personal property taxes in Vermont are imposed at the local level. The taxes collected support education and municipal services.

Taxpayers in Vermont no longer have to file Form HS-131, Homestead Declaration, annually. Once they file the form, it remains on record until the home is sold or there's a change in the homestead's use.

Form HS-145, Property Tax Adjustment Claim, assists VT residents to pay their property taxes. This form must be filed for every Tax Year. Eligibility requirements include proof of homestead ownership, use of the property as a principal residence, and residency for the full Tax Year. You also must meet household income criteria.

Odd Tax Fact:

Individuals who earned income from being in a commercial filmed in Vermont can receive an unlimited tax credit. The credit amount is the difference of the tax on the commercial income (at his or her state of residence's highest personal income tax rate) and Vermont's income tax rate.
