Online eFile Tax Return Rejection Codes

eFile.com Tax Ideas

If your tax return got rejected by the IRS or state, search the rejection code below for detailed instructions on how to correct your tax return. Don't worry: a rejection of an e-filed tax return usually requires only a small correction. You can then re-efile at no additional charge.

If you did not prepare and e-file your tax return through eFile.com, you can still search the rejection codes below as they are the same codes issued by the IRS and states. However, the instruction on how to correct your return might not match the site where you prepared or e-filed your return. Contact us here at eFile.com for additional assistance.

Once you have searched your rejection code, sign back into your tax return. You will see similar step-by-step instructions on how to correct your tax return on the right side of the page after sign in. Once you have completed the correction, click continue and eFile your tax return again at no extra charge.

Problem: The IRS—not eFile.com—has rejected your return because the primary SSN or Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) for you or one of your dependents on the federal return is incorrect OR has already been used on a filed return with the IRS. If applicable, this might also apply to your state tax return.

Solution: Let us help you turn this into an IRS acceptance. Sign into your eFile.com account: https://mytaxes.efile.com/1040/SignIn/ and click Name and Address on the left side menu.

Scroll down and make the necessary correction. Update your and/or your Dependent's SSN or TIN. Save the changes, click Continue, and follow the screen instruction to re-efile your federal and state returns for free.

However, if you entered your SSN and/or TIN correctly and you keep getting rejected for any reasons, PRINT your return(s)—IRS and State(s)—and MAIL it in on time. Sign your return and mail it to the IRS. See printing and mailing instructions plus addresses based on your resident state. After that, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and/or State and discuss your tax return in more detail. If the IRS does not accept your return because a return under your SSN has been accepted by the IRS, ask yourself if you have already filed elsewhere. Problem: The IRS—not eFile.com—rejected your Federal Tax Return because the date of birth you entered for yourself, your spouse, or your dependent does not match what the IRS has in their records.

Solution: Let us help you turn this rejection into an IRS acceptance. Sign into your eFile.com account: https://mytaxes.efile.com/1040/signin and click Name and Address on the left side menu of your account screen. Here, check your date of birth and/or your spouse's date of birth if needed. Correct any dates of birth and save your changes. If you need to correct your dependent's date of birth, go to your Child or Dependent screen for that dependent, correct the date of birth there, and save your changes. Click File on the left side of your account screen and follow all the on-screen prompts to re-efile your return(s) at no extra charge.

Attention: However, if you entered the information correctly and you still get rejected, then the issue is with the IRS:

  • Contact the IRS—their number is 1-800-829-1040—and ask about your birth date.
  • Contact Social Security and see if the issue with the birth date is with them, since they share data with the IRS: Social Security Administration.

If the IRS cannot correct this now, sign back into your eFile.com return and click on My Account. There, download the PDF file and then, PRINT, SIGN, and MAIL your federal return to the IRS. See printing and mailing instructions to find the correct address based on your resident state.

You may need to print, sign, and mail your State Tax Return to the State Tax Agency. After that, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and discuss your tax return in more detail since they may need to correct their records.

Problem: The IRS—not eFile.com—rejected your Federal Tax Return because a dependent on your return has already been claimed by another person OR the dependent filed their own return and did not indicate that they can be claimed as a dependent on another person's return.

Solution: Let us help you turn this into an IRS acceptance. Sign into your eFile.com account at https://mytaxes.efile.com/1040/SignIn/ and click Federal Taxes on the left side menu in your account. Then, open the Dependent tab to see your child or dependent(s). You can then verify that the dependent information is correct and/or remove the dependent that cannot be claimed.

Note: This does not necessarily mean someone had the right to claim the dependent. If this is the case, you will need to PRINT your return from your account, sign it, and mail it to the IRS, because the IRS e-file system will reject your return as it is now until the other return is amended. Find the right address to use based on your resident state. You may need to print, sign, and mail your State Tax Return to the State Tax Agency as well.

If you think the SSN of the dependent in question might have been used fraudulently, learn more here: Someone Claimed Your Kid, Dependent, What Can You Do? (efile.com). When you mail the return, you may need to include the documentation listed on the linked page.

Problem: The IRS—not eFile.com—rejected your Federal Tax Return because you are under the age of 16 and/or have never filed a tax return before.

Solution: Since the IRS is not allowing your return to be electronically filed, please sign into your eFile.com account: https://mytaxes.efile.com/1040/SignIn/ and click Name and Address on the left side menu of your account. Here, verify the date of birth entered; make any corrections and save them, then click File on the left side of your account screen and follow all the on-screen prompts to re-efile your return at no extra charge.

However, if the date of birth is correct, please download  your return(s) from your My Account (upper right) after sign in. Then PRINT, SIGN and MAIL it to the IRS. The IRS does not allow returns from taxpayers under the age of 16 to be efiled if this is their first return. The IRS will allow you to e-file your return next year. Problem: The State Tax Agency—not eFile.com—has rejected your State Tax Return because you efiled it with your Federal Tax Return and the IRS rejected your Federal Return. State returns cannot be accepted until Federal Returns are accepted by the IRS first.

Solution: Let us help you turn this rejection into an IRS acceptance. Sign into your eFile.com account: https://mytaxes.efile.com/1040/SignIn/, click File on the left side menu of your account screen, and follow all the on-screen prompts to re-efile your State Return (and your Federal return, if you have not done so yet) at no extra charge. Problem: What to do when the IRS rejects your 2023 tax return even if you entered the correct 2022 AGI or Adjusted Gross Income amount?

2022 AGI Solution: The IRS AGI rejections have been a problem for the last 3 years. Taxpayers get rightfully frustrated and can't accept the fact that when they enter the correct 2022 AGI amount as listed on line 11 of their 2022 Form 1040, the IRS rejects the return even though the AGI amount is correct.

These 2022 AGI rejections are not an eFile.com tax app transfer issue. This issue is an amount miss-match of the 2022 AGI entered by the taxpayer and the 2022 AGI amount stored by the IRS AGI verification system.

We recommend taking these steps to get the 2022 AGI rejection issue solved:

Step

Instructions
Step 1:
Actual 2022 AGI $ amount
Make sure you entered the correct 2022 AGI amount during checkout (verify on Form 1040, line 11). If are filing as married filing joint (MFJ) for 2023, enter the same AGI amount for your spouse if you also filed married filing joint in 2022. If you got married in 2023 and your spouse had a different 2022 AGI, then enter this amount during checkout. If you got divorced in 2023 enter the 2022 MFJ joint return for 2023.
Step 2:
2022 Tax Amendment AGI
If Step 1 failed and only if you filed a tax amendment for tax year 2022, enter you and your spouse's (if MFJ) adjusted tax amendment based AGI instead of the AGI from your original return on Form 1040 line 11. If you did not file as MFJ in 2022, try and enter your actual 2022 AGI and the spouse's AGI as 0 and vice versa.
Step 3:
0 (Zero) as 2022 AGI
If Step 1 and 2 failed or do not apply, enter 0 (as in the number zero) for you and your spouse (if MFJ) as your 2022 AGI. If you did not file as MFJ in 2022, try and enter your actual 2022 AGI and the spouse's AGI as 0 and vice versa.
Step 4:
2022 Tax Transcript
If Step 1, 2, and 3 failed, get a free 2022 tax transcript as the IRS might have adjusted your 2022 AGI without your knowledge. Get the transcript here https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript (be prepared for the ID.me based verification process on the IRS site) or call the automated Internal Revenue Service Transcript Order Line at 1-800-908-9946. You might have to wait 5 days to get the 2022 transcript with your AGI mailed to you.
Step 5:
Mail In
As the last option and only if Steps 1-4 have failed and only after you have contacted eFile.com, download, print, sign, and mail your return from your eFile.com My Account. Do not mail your state return to the IRS but only to the respective state agency. See mailing instructions here.

  • Note: The 2022 AGI here is only used to verify your identity. If the IRS has for some reason not updated your correct 2022 AGI, then they will have stored it as 0, thus if you enter 0, you have verified your identity. This is NOT an indication that your actual and correct 2022 AGI is false or incorrect on your tax return and you will NOT get in trouble for this.
  • Tip: Once your tax return got rejected as a result of Step 1, do not try to e-File your tax return over and over again with the same correct 2022 AGI entries. Instead, move on to the next step and DO NOT SKIP Steps 3 and 4 if 1 and/or 2 have failed.

Sign into your eFile.com account

Next year, your AGI will be stored conveniently for you in your eFile.com account under My Account

Problem: The IRS—not eFile.com—rejected your Federal Tax Return because the Employer Identification Number (EIN) you entered from a W-2 does not match the number that the IRS has for this employer. Either you entered the number incorrectly from the W-2 OR the employer provided an incorrect EIN to you.

Solution: Let us help you turn this into an IRS acceptance. Please sign into your eFile.com account: https://mytaxes.efile.com/1040/SignIn/, click Federal Taxes/Review on the left side menu in your account, click the "I'd like to see all federal forms" link, and click the name of your W-2 screen(s). See printing and mailing instructions plus addresses based on your resident state. You may need to print, sign, and mail your State Tax Return to the State Tax Agency. Problem: The IRS—not eFile.com—rejected your Federal Tax Return because you did not enter a valid Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP-PIN) on your e-filed return.

The IP PIN is a 6-digit number assigned by the IRS, or requested by eligible taxpayers, to taxpayers who had their identities stolen to file fraudulent tax returns. It provides an extra layer of protection on an e-Filed return and helps to prevent the misuse of their Social Security Numbers on fraudulent Federal Income Tax Returns.

Solution: You can retrieve a new IP-PIN here:

https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/get-an-identity-protection-pin

If you're unable to retrieve your IP PIN online via the link above, call 800-908-4490, Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. your local time (Alaska & Hawaii follow Pacific Time), to have your IP PIN reissued over the phone. An assistant will verify your identity and mail your IP PIN to your address of record within 21 days.

Exceptions:

If you’ve moved since January 1 of this year, or
It’s after October 14 and you haven’t filed your current or prior year Forms 1040 or 1040 PR/SS.

You can also schedule an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center and get your IP-PIN there. You will have to provide information listed on the page after you clicked.

Let us help you turn this rejection into an IRS acceptance. Sign into your eFile.com account: https://mytaxes.efile.com/1040/SignIn/, click File on the left side of your account screen and follow all the on-screen prompts until you reach the screen asking you if you received an IP-PIN. Answer Yes and enter your IP-PIN in the box on the next screen.

Follow the rest of the on-screen prompts to re-efile your return(s) at no extra charge.

However, if you cannot get your return accepted with your current or new IP-PIN, please download your return from your My Account. Then print, sign and mail it to the IRS. Find the right address to use at https://www.efile.com/irs-mailing-addresses/. You may also need to print, sign, and mail your State Tax Return to the State Tax Agency. Problem: The IRS—not eFile.com—rejected your Federal Income Tax Return because another taxpayer has claimed you on their tax return and that return is accepted. This happens many times if a child/student files a return but is claimed as a dependent on his or her parent's return. Or, if Form 1040—Primary Claim As Dependent—is not checked, then the Primary SSN can not be the same as a Dependent SSN on another return.

Solution: Let's fix this so your IRS return will be accepted. Please sign into your eFile.com account, click Name and Address on the left side menu in your account, and select the "Yes" option reporting that someone can claim you as a dependent. Click the green "Save" button at the bottom to save your changes.

If you cannot be claimed as a dependent, this does not necessarily mean they had the right to claim you as a dependent. Please PRINT your return from your account, sign it, and MAIL it to the IRS. See printing and mailing instructions plus addresses based on your resident state. You may need to print, sign, and mail your State Tax Return to the State Tax Agency. After that, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and discuss your tax return in more detail.

Solution: Let us help you turn this into an IL state acceptance.

Please sign into your eFile.com account at https://mytaxes.efile.com/1040/SignIn/, click File on the left side menu in your account, and follow all the on-screen prompts until you reach the screen asking for your IL signature. If you do not have any of this information, you can not eFile your return and thus must PRINT your return from your account, sign it, and MAIL it to the IL State Tax Agency. The address is on the form. Or, check here:  Contact us with questions: https://www.efile.com/tax-service/contact/efile-contact/

Problem: If the IRS rejected one or more of these credits: EITC, CTC, ACTC or AOTC, you may have received a letter stating that the credit was disallowed. That means you'll need to add Information To Claim Refundable Credits After Dis-allowance to your return.

In order to take credit in a given or future tax year, you must re-certify yourself by filing Form 8862 with your tax return. Solution: Sign into your eFile.com account at https://mytaxes.efile.com/1040/SignIn/, click on My Return and follow the instructions on the right side of your screen: Click on the green button "Add Information To Claim Refundable Credits After Disallowance" on that page. Problem: The State of Illinois—not eFile.com—has rejected the secondary taxpayer driver license signature field because it does not exactly match what the State has on record.

Solution: Sign into your eFile.com account at https://mytaxes.efile.com/1040/SignIn/ and click on My Return. Here, follow the instructions on the right side to correct this. You can either correct the spouse's Illinois driver's license/state ID information or use a different signature verification method on your Illinois return. Note: If the spouse didn't file an Illinois return last year, his or her Illinois driver's license/state ID is the only signature verification method available to them. If they don't have this, you'll need to file a paper return this year. Next year, however, you should be able to e-file.

After that, you can re-eFile your federal and state returns at no additional charge.

Problem: The IRS—not eFile.com—rejected your tax return because you checked the box indicating that your dependent qualifies for the Child Tax Credit, but the dependent is 17 or older.

Solution: According to IRS records, your dependent was 17 or older by the end of the tax year. If that is incorrect, please check the dependent's Social Security Number (SSN) and date of birth as entered in your eFile.com account to make sure those are entered correctly. To find your dependents, click on Federal Taxes -> Dependents in the left menu, then click on the name you need to check. Make any changes needed, save them, and try to e-file your tax return again.

If your dependent was in fact still 16 or younger by the end of the tax year, then the IRS and/or Social Security Administration must have data wrong in their database. If this is the case, you would need to contact the IRS and Social Security Administration to verify your dependent's SSN and date of birth.

To correct any errors that may be present, you can contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 and the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. You may experience long hold times or not being able to get through right away to these two agencies, but do not give up, as they are very busy right now. You may have more luck if you find and call the phone numbers for any local SSA or IRS offices that might be in your state.

After any update to their systems, you will probably need to paper file your tax returns.

Problem: The IRS—not eFile.com—rejected your tax return because your name and Social Security Number (SSN) don't match IRS records.

Solution: Sign into your eFile.com account at https://mytaxes.efile.com/1040/SignIn/. Click Name and Address on the left side of your account screen and review your name and SSN. If the information is entered incorrectly, correct it and save your changes. Then re-eFile your federal and state returns at no additional charge. Contact Social Security and see if the issue with the SSN and/or name is with them, as they provide data to the IRS: Social Security Administration. You may also need to call IRS taxpayer assistance at 1-800-829-1040.

However, if you are certain you entered your primary SSN correctly, but you keep getting rejected for any reason, PRINT your extension and MAIL it in on time. See printing and mailing instructions plus addresses based on your resident state.

After that, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to discuss your tax return extension in more detail, or file a tax return first. If the IRS does not accept your extension return because an extension under the primary SSN has been accepted by the IRS, ask yourself if you have already filed elsewhere.

If you have not already filed elsewhere, you may be a victim of identity theft. See here for more information about data security concerns

Problem: The IRS—not eFile.com—has rejected your return because the Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) on your Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR is different than the AGI on your Form 8962 Premium Tax Credit. This difference is because of the unemployment compensation exclusion recently allowed by the American Rescue Plan Act. We are working with the IRS to resolve this issue. Thank you for your patience.

Solution: eFile.com has updated our system to include the recent change to the first $10,200 of unemployment compensation received during 2020. Taxpayers who report this income after March 16, 2021 will see this change on their return. This has unexpectedly affected other aspects of the return; the AGI has to consistently match on all forms and the Form 8962 was affected by this. We will be updating our system to accommodate for this as soon as possible.

Once this is done, you can re-efile your 2020 return for free. Sign in here and click File on the left side of the screen and go through the e-filing and checkout process.

Contact our support team if you have further questions with this.
