The IRS offers several free phone services to taxpayers. You can check your refund or economic stimulus payment, or you can take advantage of the TeleTax system to learn about a multitude of tax topics. You can also call the Tax Assistance Hotline for specific questions.
Check Your Stimulus Payment Status
If you have not received your Stimulus Payment, according to the Stimulus Schedule, please call the IRS Economic Stimulus Toll-Free Hotline at 1-866-234-2942. This line will also be updated with information about new stimulus efforts.
Refund Hotline: 1-800-829-1954
You can call the Refund Hotline to check the status of your tax refund, or if you received your refund check but it was lost or destroyed. You will need to enter your Social Security number, your filing status, and the refund amount on your return. The Refund Hotline is open during business hours, but you may call the TeleTax number below for automated tax refund information 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Be aware, however, that the IRS is understaffed with customer service representatives and the service has set a goal of answering only 71% of tax assistance calls in 2010. In addition, the average wait time for callers is estimated to be 12 minutes.
