ITIN Applicaton with Tax Return Preparation Without SSN

Sample ITIN or Individual Taxpayer Identification No. Card

ITIN

1. An application for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number includes a Federal Tax Return. If you do not have yet a SSN or ITIN here are the instructions on how to prepare Tax Returns on eFile.com.

2. A Individual Taxpayer Identification Number or ITIN is a 9-digit tax processing number issued by the IRS - see the image on the right.  Include your federal tax return when you apply for the ITIN. ITINs are to individuals who are required to file and thus need a U.S. taxpayer identification number because they do not have yet or are not eligible to receive, a Social Security number or SSN.

  • If your ITIN is only used on information tax returns by third parties, you don’t have to renew your ITIN even if the ITIN has expired for purposes of filing a U.S. federal tax return. However, in the future, if you file another income tax return, you will need to renew your ITIN at that time for Form W-7.

You can submit your ITIN application at any time when you have a filing or reporting requirement. Complete Form W-7 and submit it as outlined below. If the paper tax return you attach to Form W-7 is filed after the return's due date, you may owe late filing interest and/or penalties if you owe taxes. If you do not owe taxes with your tax return, late filing penalties will not apply. You have 3 years from the tax return due date to claim a tax refund by filing a return within the 3 years.
